Hyperhidrosis Excessive sweating

Hyperhidrosis is the medical term for excessive sweating. Axillary Hyperhidrosis is when the sweating is particularly bad, under the arms. Sweating is one of the most important ways in which the body loses heat, however, people with hyperhidrosis, produce sweat in amounts far greater than needed to control their temperature. It is thought that about one in 200 people have some form of hyperhidrosis.

There are two main types of hyperhidrosis. The more common type is focal hyperhidrosis, which can affect the armpits, hands, feet or face. Generalised hyperhidrosis is less common, affecting the whole body. This is often caused by other health problems such as diabetes or hyperthyroidism. Often when the health problem is treated, the sweating usually stops.

Botulinum toxin is a neurotoxin, which is produced by the anaerobic bacterium clostridium botulinum. It hinders the nerve endings of the motor end plates. Fifteen to twenty drops of botox are injected through a very small needle into the skin of each underarm. This procedure does not hamper normal activity but heavy exercise should be avoided for few hours. Underarm sweating decreases by 90% for the first two days and the full effect can be seen within one week. Sweating at night is also seen to considerably decrease by the use of botox hyperhidrosis treatment. There may be simultaneous disappearance of odor associated with decreased sweating, but this is not permanent.. Most patients obtain the benefit of dryness with one treatment of Botox for six to ten months. After that the treatment has to be repeated. This is the best remedy for excessive sweating.
