TCM Acupuncture is one of the method system of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), which uses fine needle insertion (with further stimulation) through the skin at specific body points, according to the TCM holistic principles. Based on TCM physiology and pathology, TCM acupuncture targets to balance and harmonise physical, mental and emotional states of the person, using body potential.
TCM acupuncture counts over 2000 years of observation, theoretical and practical research of the human body. This ancient tradition has being continued by the modern acupuncture research studies (see last research papers at www.acupuncture.org.uk).
The World Health Organisation (WHO) has given a great value of acupuncture effectiveness in a long list of diseases, among them are Asthma, Bronchitis, Sinusitis, PMS, Irregular or Painful Periods, Menopausal Syndrome, Migraine, Nausea, Indigestion, Constipation, IBS, High Blood Pressure, Obesity, Diabetes, Neck-Shoulder/Back/Knee pain, Arthritis (both osteoarthritis and Rheumatoid Arthritis), Strains and Sprains, Fluid Retention, Skin Disorders, Parkinson's Disease, Alzheimer's Disease, Dementia, Insomnia, Post stroke sequelae, etc.
'Acupuncture is suitable for people of all ages, including pregnant women and children, and can be used effectively alongside conventional medicine' (BAcC).
One of the most asked question is about safety of acupuncture treatment.
The number of scientific research studies in this area has been done in Western countries from the beginning of this century. They concluded that it is safe, if the practitioner has an appropriate education and qualification.
Acupuncturists in the United Kingdom should have a Diploma in acupuncture or a License of Acupuncture, membership with British Acupuncture Council (BAcC) or other officially recognised professional bodies.
For the safety reasons single use sterile acupuncture needles are applied and disposed after each treatment. Every pack of needles is sealed and opened in front of you, unused needles from open packs will be disposed in a special sharp bin.
The side effect of acupuncture: sometimes you can get bruise after needle insertion, very rare tiredness or feeling of dizziness for a short period of time. If you are under medical supervision, it is recommended to inform your doctor about your acupuncture treatment. Prescribed medication should not be stopped, unless you had a consultation with you doctor about it.
Your health insurer can cover the cost of acupuncture treatments, so don't forget to ask your acupuncturist if your health insurer is in the 'open' list of BAcC , or ask your insurer directly if their insurance policies could cover it with BAcC registered acupuncturist.
