CANDIDA ALBICANS / candidiasis or Dangerous fungus - Candida auris

A group of American scientists conducted a comprehensive study of the yeast Candida auris, the infection of which has a high lethality. Fungal strains exhibit multiple drug resistance, but some are insensitive to all commercially available antifungal agents.

Pathogen

Detection of the first strain of Candida auris occurred in samples of a Japanese patient in 2008. Medical registers have recorded contamination cases with this fungus worldwide since that time. Infection presents a particular danger since the frequency of deaths reached 60 per cent.

The high lethality of Candida auris may be related to its invasiveness. Unlike other pathogenic yeast, it does not just multiply on the surface of the skin and mucous membranes but penetrates the blood. This pathogen is a typical “hospital infection”, spreading mainly inside hospitals through medical equipment.

Study of Candida auris

The researchers tested antimycotics of eleven action classes for their impact on the fungus’ viability. All strains showed resistance to them to a greater or lesser extent. Only one drug, called SCY-078, reduced the growth rate of all strains. Scientists suggest that it can become the basis of future therapy for C. auris infection.

Also, contrary to previous studies, scientists have shown that the fungus can form biofilms, which usually contribute to resistance to antimicrobial drugs. Also, despite high infectivity, C. auris does not create a spore and has reduced the activity of proteinases and phospholipases.

Before this study, complete antibiotic resistance was observed only in bacteria. Recently, scientists have discovered new ways of transmitting resistance to antibiotics of the “last reserve”.

Clinical cases

Patients with a weakened immune system become infected with candidiasis in hospitals often. This infection is the cause of the high death rate and is difficult to determine. There are clinical cases in more than a dozen countries around the world. The fungus can be attached to the skin and persists in the environment for a long, passing between patients. Healthcare calls take all precautions when dealing with possible carriers of infection.

A healthy lifestyle, regular detox, and immune system strengthening will allow the body to withstand dangerous diseases. Colonic Irrigation will help to stay healthy.
