What is colonic irrigation?

Colonic irrigation, also known as colon hydrotherapy, is a complementary wellbeing procedure in which filtered, temperature-controlled water is gently introduced into the large intestine through specialist equipment.

Water enters and leaves through the equipment while the therapist remains with the client. At Parkland Natural Health, controlled filling and release may be combined with gentle abdominal massage during the session.

Every appointment begins with a consultation and suitability screening so that the procedure can be explained and relevant health considerations discussed before treatment starts.

How to choose a colonic irrigation clinic in the UK

Distance and price are not the only things worth comparing. Before making an appointment, check how the clinic approaches training, screening, hygiene and client care.

Before you book

  • Who will carry out the treatment?
  • What professional training do they have?
  • Is consultation included?
  • Is suitability screening carried out?
  • Are prices clearly published?

About the treatment

  • Does the clinic use an open or closed system?
  • Are single-use treatment accessories used?
  • Are contraindications clearly explained?
  • Can you ask questions before travelling?
  • Is aftercare information available?

A professional clinic should give you enough information to make your own decision without pressure to proceed.

Closed-system colonic hydrotherapy

At Parkland Natural Health: we use a closed-system, gravity-fed approach.

Water and bowel contents pass through enclosed tubing during the procedure. The therapist remains present throughout the appointment and can adjust the pace according to your comfort and response.

Is colonic irrigation suitable for everyone?

No. There are medical circumstances in which colon hydrotherapy may not be appropriate.

For this reason, screening forms an important part of the appointment. Relevant medical history, current health, medication and previous surgery may need to be considered before treatment proceeds.

Not sure?

Before booking, you can check our contraindications and restrictions or complete the free Bowel Health Self-Assessment.

The online assessment is a guide only. Final suitability is considered during consultation with the practitioner.

What does research say about bowel irrigation?

Scientific research into irrigation-based bowel management is growing. However, it is important to understand what the studies actually investigate.

Much of the published research relates to medical transanal or colonic irrigation used for selected patients with chronic constipation, faecal incontinence or other bowel-function disorders. These protocols and patient groups may differ from complementary colon hydrotherapy provided in a wellbeing clinic.

2025 systematic review — 1,567 patients

A systematic review examined transanal irrigation for chronic constipation and faecal incontinence. Many observational studies reported improvements in symptoms or quality of life, although the authors noted that further randomised controlled research is needed.

2021 systematic review — 27 studies

A review involving 1,435 participants reported improvements in bowel function across several patient groups, with some studies also reporting improvements in quality of life. The authors nevertheless described the overall evidence as limited.

2015 meta-analysis — chronic functional constipation

Seven studies involving 254 patients were included. The pooled response to transanal irrigation was approximately 50%, although study methods and quality varied considerably.

Small pilot study involving IBS

A small 18-patient pilot study using a specific colonic irrigation system reported improvements in several symptoms. Because the study was small and preliminary, the results should not be generalised to all colon hydrotherapy treatments.

In summary: research suggests that irrigation-based bowel management may be useful for some carefully selected patients in particular clinical settings. It does not establish colon hydrotherapy as a treatment or cure for a broad range of diseases.

Different colonic irrigation options

Some clinics provide only a standard colonic session, while others offer additional options.

At Parkland Natural Health, you can begin with a standard closed-system colonic irrigation appointment or compare specialist options including sodium bicarbonate, probiotic and selected herbal preparations.

Specialist options are not automatically suitable for everyone. Your practitioner can discuss the available choices during consultation.

Travelling to London for colonic irrigation

Some clients choose a clinic based on its approach, system and practitioner rather than simply choosing the closest location.

If you are travelling from elsewhere in the UK, consider transport connections and allow enough time to arrive without rushing.
