Anti-Spasmodic Herbal Colonic with Sodium Bicarbonate in London
This specialised appointment combines closed-system, gravity-fed colon hydrotherapy with Practitioner Supplies ASP Enema Herbs and a carefully prepared sodium bicarbonate solution.
It is designed for clients who want an enhanced colonic option where bowel spasm, cramping or trapped gas is a particular concern. Some clients with diagnosed IBS also choose this treatment when spasm or gas is one of their main symptoms. However, colon hydrotherapy is not a treatment or cure for IBS, and persistent, changing or unexplained digestive symptoms should be medically assessed.
Your appointment takes place at Parkland Natural Health in Holborn, Central London. It includes a personal consultation, suitability screening, the colonic procedure and aftercare guidance.
What is in the anti-spasmodic herbal blend?
We use Practitioner Supplies ASP Enema Herbs, a professional liquid herbal preparation made for enema use. The current supplier formula contains:
- Raspberry leaf (Rubus idaeus)
- German chamomile (Chamomilla recutita)
- Lobelia (Lobelia inflata)
- Peppermint (Mentha piperita)
- Motherwort (Leonurus cardiaca)
The supplier describes this formulation as containing smooth-muscle-relaxant herbs for use when bowel muscle spasm is evident and states that it may also help with gas.
Supplier source: Practitioner Supplies – ASP Enema Herbs.
These are manufacturer-described and traditional uses. They should not be interpreted as clinical proof that this particular rectal herbal preparation treats IBS or another gastrointestinal disorder.
What does research say about antispasmodic ingredients?
Peppermint has genuine scientific interest as an antispasmodic. The NHS describes oral peppermint oil as an antispasmodic medicine that relaxes bowel muscle and can help stomach cramps, bloating and flatulence, particularly in people with IBS.
A 2022 systematic review and meta-analysis included 10 randomised controlled trials involving 1,030 people with IBS. Oral peppermint oil performed better than placebo for global IBS symptoms and abdominal pain. However, adverse events were more common and the authors rated the quality of evidence as very low.
Scientific sources: PubMed PMID 35942669 – Systematic review and meta-analysis of peppermint oil in IBS; NHS – About peppermint oil.
German chamomile also has a long history of gastrointestinal and antispasmodic use, and pharmacological reviews describe experimental smooth-muscle and antispasmodic activity.
Scientific source: PubMed PMID 35454969 – Chamomile: ethnomedicinal use, phytochemistry and pharmacological uses.
Important evidence boundary: research on oral peppermint oil, individual herbs or laboratory models does not prove that the same effects occur when this multi-herb preparation is used rectally during professional colon hydrotherapy.
What about IBS, bowel spasm and trapped gas?
IBS is a recognised disorder of gut–brain interaction and can involve abdominal pain, cramping, bloating and altered bowel habits. NICE guidance recommends considering antispasmodic medicines for people with IBS according to their symptoms, alongside dietary and lifestyle advice.
Clinical guidance: NICE – Irritable bowel syndrome in adults: diagnosis and management.
This guidance supports the general clinical relevance of bowel spasm as a symptom target. It does not establish colon hydrotherapy or our herbal implant as a medical treatment for IBS. At Parkland Natural Health, the session is offered as a complementary wellbeing procedure and is adapted to your comfort and response following consultation.
Why is sodium bicarbonate included?
Sodium bicarbonate is a separate specialist component used in several of our colonic treatments. Laboratory studies have demonstrated antifungal activity against fungal isolates, including yeasts, and have examined its effects on Candida species.
Scientific sources: PubMed PMID 22991095 – Antifungal activity of sodium bicarbonate; PubMed PMID 20027444 – Effect of sodium bicarbonate on Candida albicans adherence.
However, laboratory antifungal activity does not prove that sodium bicarbonate delivered during colon hydrotherapy removes intestinal Candida, treats intestinal candidiasis or improves IBS. We therefore do not use the bicarbonate component as a claim to diagnose or cure infection.
What happens during the appointment?
Your appointment begins with a personal consultation and suitability screening. We use a closed-system, gravity-fed colon hydrotherapy set-up with filtered, temperature-controlled water.
Your therapist remains with you throughout the procedure and can adjust the water flow according to your comfort and response. Gentle abdominal massage may also be used where appropriate. Water, gas and bowel contents leave through enclosed tubing.
The sodium bicarbonate solution and professional herbal preparation are incorporated according to our clinic protocol. If spasm or discomfort occurs, the therapist can slow or pause the flow and adapt the session.
If this is your first colonic, read our What to Expect from Colonic Hydrotherapy guide before booking.
How should I prepare?
A quick tip: don’t drink any liquids two hours before your procedure. Besides, do not take laxatives or drink coffee before and after treatment. However, you don’t need to fast before or after visiting us.
You can eat normally, although many clients prefer not to have a particularly heavy meal immediately before the appointment. If a laxative is part of prescribed medical treatment, do not change prescribed medication without appropriate medical advice; contact us before your appointment if you are unsure.
Who should not choose this treatment?
Colon hydrotherapy is not suitable for everyone. In addition, Practitioner Supplies states that ASP Enema Herbs are not suitable during planned pregnancy, pregnancy or breastfeeding, and are not suitable for children.
Please tell your therapist about your medical history, medication, recent surgery, rectal bleeding, significant abdominal pain and any known allergy or sensitivity to the herbal ingredients.
For the full screening guidance, see our Colonic Irrigation Contraindications and Restrictions page. If screening shows that treatment is not appropriate for you, we will not proceed and will issue a full refund.
Is this the right colonic for me?
This option may appeal if you specifically want a colonic that combines the Practitioner Supplies anti-spasmodic herbal blend with sodium bicarbonate, particularly where bowel spasm, cramping or trapped gas is a concern.
If you prefer the herbal preparation without sodium bicarbonate, see our Anti-Spasmodic Herbal Colonic Irrigation.
If you want sodium bicarbonate without the herbal preparation, see our Sodium Bicarbonate Colonic Irrigation.
You can also compare all colonic irrigation treatments and prices before booking.
