Benefits of Colonic Irrigation (Colon Hydrotherapy)
People explore the benefits of colonic irrigation for many different reasons. Some feel constipated, bloated or uncomfortably full. Others notice trapped wind, irregular bowel habits or a feeling that the bowel has not emptied fully.
You may also notice digestive changes after antibiotics, illness, travel or a major change in diet. Perhaps you already have an IBS diagnosis, or you are interested in a more active approach to bowel wellbeing.
At Parkland Natural Health in Holborn, we do not present colon hydrotherapy as a cure for digestive disease. We offer it as a supportive, complementary wellbeing procedure. Every first appointment includes consultation and suitability screening, and your therapist adapts the session to your comfort and bowel response.
What benefits do clients commonly look for?
The experience varies from person to person. However, clients commonly explore colon hydrotherapy because they are interested in:
- help with bowel emptying during the appointment;
- relief from a feeling of abdominal fullness;
- passing trapped gas more comfortably;
- greater awareness of normal bowel sensations and the urge to evacuate;
- a structured approach to reviewing bowel habits over more than one appointment;
- a general feeling of being lighter or more comfortable afterwards.
These are reasons people choose the procedure and experiences some clients report. They are not guaranteed outcomes, and they do not mean that colon hydrotherapy treats disease elsewhere in the body.
More than simply cleansing the bowel
The immediate purpose of colon hydrotherapy is straightforward. Warm filtered water enters the colon through a closed-system, gravity-fed set-up. Water, gas and bowel contents then leave through enclosed drainage tubing.
For us, however, an appointment is not measured only by how much bowel content leaves the body. We also pay attention to how you experience filling, the urge to empty and the release phase. Your therapist can adjust the water flow, allow more time for evacuation and use gentle abdominal massage where appropriate.
This makes the session interactive rather than automatic. Your therapist remains with you throughout and adapts the procedure according to your comfort and response.
Constipation, incomplete emptying and a sluggish bowel
One common reason people contact us is that bowel movements have become infrequent, difficult or unsatisfying. Some go only every few days. Others rely on laxatives or coffee, or regularly feel that the bowel has not emptied fully.
We do not describe colon hydrotherapy as a medical treatment for chronic constipation. Persistent constipation can have many causes, and ongoing, unusual or unexplained symptoms should be assessed appropriately by a GP or another healthcare professional.
During a suitable appointment, colon hydrotherapy can assist evacuation while allowing the therapist to observe how your bowel responds to controlled filling and release. If you choose a course, later appointments also give us an opportunity to review your response from one session to the next.
What does research show about repeated bowel irrigation?
Medical research has examined repeated transanal irrigation in people with chronic constipation and difficulty managing bowel emptying.
A 2025 systematic review included 16 studies involving 1,567 people with chronic constipation and/or faecal incontinence. Most of the observational studies reported some improvement in symptoms, quality of life or both. However, only one underpowered randomised trial was available, and the authors highlighted the need for better-quality randomised research.
Scientific source: PubMed PMID 41168141 – Transanal irrigation: Bridging the gap in treatment for chronic constipation and/or faecal incontinence.
A 2026 prospective multicentre observational study enrolled 216 adults with functional constipation. Among the 175 people prescribed transanal irrigation, researchers reported improved satisfaction with bowel function, improved quality-of-life scores and lower constipation severity during follow-up. The study was not randomised, so the results should be interpreted in that context.
Scientific source: PubMed PMID 42011892 – Transanal Irrigation in Functional Constipation: Long-term Results From an Italian National Study.
An earlier prospective study of retrograde colonic irrigation also reported improvements in bowel-emptying symptoms in selected patients, including a reduction in the feeling of incomplete evacuation.
Scientific source: PubMed PMID 18720454 – Prospective study of colonic irrigation for the treatment of defaecation disorders.
These medical irrigation protocols are not identical to professional colon hydrotherapy at Parkland Natural Health. We therefore use this evidence as clinical context for repeated bowel irrigation rather than as proof that a particular number of professional colonics will produce the same result.
Bowel filling and normal defecation reflexes
Human physiology research also provides useful context for what people feel during filling and release. In one study, rectal filling to the point of an urge to evacuate was associated with increased pressure and contraction in the left colon. The researchers described this response as a recto-colic reflex.
Scientific source: PubMed PMID 9028993 – Recto-colic reflex: role in the defecation mechanism.
This helps explain why filling and the urge to empty are meaningful parts of bowel physiology. However, it does not prove that colon hydrotherapy permanently strengthens bowel muscles, repairs nerves or guarantees independence from laxatives.
Abdominal massage and bowel comfort
Gentle abdominal massage is also part of many of our appointments. A 2026 systematic review and meta-analysis of abdominal colonic massage for chronic constipation included 54 studies, with 35 studies and 1,965 patients contributing to the meta-analysis. The authors reported improvements in bowel-movement frequency and quality of life with manual and device-assisted massage.
Scientific source: PubMed PMID 41919979 – Safety and Efficacy of Manual and Automated Abdominal Colonic Massage for Chronic Constipation.
This research concerns abdominal massage rather than colon hydrotherapy as a whole. It therefore supports one technique used during some appointments, not a claim that colon hydrotherapy itself produces the same effects.
Reconnecting with your bowel signals
People with difficult or irregular bowel habits can become less aware of normal bowel sensations over time. Some postpone going to the toilet, rely on a fixed morning routine or wait for coffee or another stimulant before expecting a bowel movement.
During colon hydrotherapy, you experience filling, movement, an urge to empty and release in a controlled setting. Your therapist can draw your attention to these sensations and explain what is happening during the appointment.
For some clients, this increased bowel awareness is one of the most useful parts of the experience. It may also prompt a wider discussion about hydration, movement, diet and everyday bowel habits. We present this as supportive education and awareness, not as a promise to retrain or cure the bowel.
IBS, spasms and an unpredictable bowel
Some clients come to us because their bowel pattern feels unpredictable. Stools may alternate between harder and looser, while cramps, spasms or bloating can also occur. Some clients already have an irritable bowel syndrome diagnosis.
We do not present colon hydrotherapy as a treatment for IBS. IBS symptoms can overlap with other digestive conditions, so persistent, changing or unexplained symptoms should be medically assessed.
Suitable clients may still choose colon hydrotherapy as a complementary wellbeing procedure. The therapist can adapt the session to your comfort and bowel response. We also offer an anti-spasmodic herbal colonic for clients interested in a specialist herbal option where spasm, cramping or trapped gas is a concern.
Bloating, trapped wind and abdominal fullness
Bloating, trapped wind and uncomfortable fullness are common reasons people become curious about a colonic.
During treatment, gas and bowel contents can pass through the closed drainage system. Some clients consequently report feeling less full, less aware of trapped wind or simply more comfortable afterwards.
Bloating has many possible causes, and we do not assume that retained bowel contents explain every case. Seek medical advice for persistent or unexplained bloating, significant pain, rectal bleeding or a lasting change in bowel habits.
After antibiotics and concerns about gut balance
Some people notice changes in digestion or stool patterns after antibiotics, illness or travel. Major diet changes can also affect bowel habits.
We do not claim that a colonic can medically diagnose or “correct dysbiosis”. The intestinal microbiome is complex, and bowel symptoms can have many explanations.
However, some clients want to include probiotics in a specialist colonic appointment. They can choose our probiotic implant with sodium bicarbonate colonic irrigation. Your therapist can explain the procedure and discuss whether it is suitable for you.
Sodium bicarbonate and concerns about Candida
Parkland Natural Health also offers sodium bicarbonate colonic irrigation. This specialist option is of particular interest to some clients who have questions about yeast or Candida.
What does Candida research actually show?
Laboratory studies have shown antifungal activity of sodium bicarbonate against Candida species under experimental conditions. Earlier laboratory work reported inhibition of fungal growth at tested bicarbonate concentrations.
Scientific source: PubMed PMID 22991095 – laboratory research involving sodium bicarbonate and fungal isolates.
This provides a scientific reason for interest in bicarbonate. However, laboratory antifungal activity does not prove that a sodium bicarbonate colonic removes intestinal Candida or treats intestinal candidiasis in humans.
We therefore describe sodium bicarbonate as a specialist option within our colonic practice, not as a cure for fungal infection. If you think you may have an infection, appropriate medical diagnosis and treatment remain important.
Concerned about intestinal parasites?
Some clients contact us because they are concerned about intestinal parasites, particularly after travel or ongoing digestive symptoms. Our specialist Anti-Parasite Herbal Implant & Colonic Irrigation uses a professional herbal preparation containing wormwood, German chamomile, walnut leaf and clove bud.
We offer this as a complementary, parasite-focused herbal option after colon hydrotherapy. Symptoms alone cannot diagnose parasites, and we do not claim that this procedure can diagnose, eradicate or cure a human parasitic infection.
If infection is a genuine possibility, medical testing can establish whether a parasite is present and whether specific treatment is required.
What happens during treatment?
Parkland Natural Health uses a closed-system, gravity-fed colon hydrotherapy set-up. Filtered, temperature-controlled water enters gradually while water, gas and bowel contents leave through enclosed drainage tubing.
Your therapist remains with you throughout the procedure. They can slow or pause the water flow, allow more time for release and use gentle abdominal massage where appropriate. The appointment is adapted to your comfort rather than following one fixed routine.
If this is your first colonic, read our What to Expect from Colonic Hydrotherapy page. It explains consultation, preparation, privacy, the closed system, abdominal massage, emptying and aftercare step by step.
One colonic or a course?
A single appointment can be a useful introduction because it allows both you and the therapist to see how you experience the procedure and how readily the bowel empties during the session.
Some clients prefer a structured course because it gives them continuity and more opportunities to review bowel habits, comfort and response between appointments. Research has examined repeated bowel irrigation, but it does not prove that an exact number of professional colonics is better than another.
You do not need to commit to a course before you know how your body responds. Treatment frequency can be discussed individually after your first appointment.
You can compare our 3-session course, 6-session course, 10-session course and 16-session programme, or start with a single colonic irrigation session with consultation.
A proactive approach to bowel wellbeing
You do not need to wait until bowel discomfort becomes severe before paying attention to bowel habits. Some clients come to Parkland Natural Health because they want to understand their pattern better and take a more active interest in digestive wellbeing.
A proactive approach does not mean claiming that colon hydrotherapy prevents disease. Instead, an appointment gives you an opportunity to discuss bowel patterns, everyday habits and symptoms that may need medical assessment.
This is also why consultation matters. Two people may both describe themselves as “constipated” while having very different bowel patterns, medical histories and reasons for seeking a colonic. We adapt the procedure to the individual rather than using one fixed cleansing programme.
How do clients often feel afterwards?
The reported benefits of colonic irrigation vary from person to person. Clients commonly describe experiences such as:
- feeling lighter or less full;
- greater abdominal comfort;
- less awareness of trapped wind;
- a clearer sense of bowel movement or activity;
- a general feeling of wellbeing after the appointment.
These are personal experiences, not promises that colon hydrotherapy treats skin conditions, mood disorders, allergies, fatigue or illnesses elsewhere in the body.
Is colon hydrotherapy suitable for everyone?
No. Every first appointment begins with a health-screening questionnaire and consultation.
Some digestive, heart, kidney, surgical and other medical conditions can make colon hydrotherapy unsuitable. In other cases, we may ask you to seek medical advice first. If screening shows that colon hydrotherapy is not appropriate for you, we will not proceed with treatment and will give you a full refund.

Our approach to colon hydrotherapy
If somebody wants only immediate bowel evacuation, they may view a colonic simply as a cleansing procedure. Our approach is broader: we combine controlled filling and release with therapist observation, abdominal massage where appropriate, client feedback and practical discussion about bowel habits.
Our aim is not to promise a cure, but to provide a professional, individualised colonic appointment focused on bowel emptying, comfort, response and awareness.
Ready to explore whether a colonic is right for you?
If you are comparing the benefits of colonic irrigation, your own bowel pattern matters most. Constipation, incomplete emptying, bloating, trapped wind or irregular habits may all lead you to explore the procedure. You do not need to decide everything before booking.
For a straightforward first appointment, choose our standard colonic irrigation session with consultation and suitability screening. If you want to compare specialist treatments or structured courses first, you can view all colonic options and current prices.
