What is in the herbal blend?

We use Practitioner Supplies Enema Herbs, a professional liquid herbal formulation made for enema use. The current supplier formula contains:

• Burdock root (Arctium lappa)
• Yellow dock (Rumex crispus)
• German chamomile (Chamomilla recutita)

Parkland Natural Health has used this professional Practitioner Supplies formulation for around 20 years. The supplier describes the blend as intended to provide cleansing, soothing and relaxing properties within the smooth muscle of the bowel, help with gas and support traditional liver and gallbladder-focused use.

What does research say about the herbal ingredients?

German chamomile has a long history of gastrointestinal use, and pharmacological research has examined its antispasmodic and smooth-muscle effects. Reviews describe chamomile as containing biologically active terpenoids and flavonoids, while experimental studies have investigated effects on gastrointestinal smooth muscle.

However, studies of individual herbs taken orally or tested in laboratory models do not prove that this particular herbal implant produces the same effects when used during professional colon hydrotherapy.

Why is sodium bicarbonate included?

Sodium bicarbonate is used as a specialist option within some of our colonic treatments. Laboratory studies have reported antifungal activity against Candida species under experimental conditions.

For example, one laboratory study found that sodium bicarbonate inhibited the growth of a range of fungal isolates, including yeasts. Another experimental study reported effects of sodium bicarbonate on pathogenic Candida species.

Important evidence boundary: laboratory antifungal activity does not prove that sodium bicarbonate delivered during colon hydrotherapy removes intestinal Candida, treats intestinal candidiasis or cures a fungal infection in humans. If you are concerned about infection, appropriate medical diagnosis and treatment remain important.

What happens during the appointment?

Your appointment begins with consultation and suitability screening. We use a closed-system, gravity-fed colon hydrotherapy set-up with filtered, temperature-controlled water. Your therapist remains with you throughout the procedure and can adjust the water flow according to your comfort and response.

During the session, the sodium bicarbonate and professional herbal preparation are incorporated according to the treatment protocol. Gentle abdominal massage may also be used where appropriate. Water, gas and bowel contents leave through enclosed tubing.

How should I prepare?

A quick tip: don’t drink any liquids two hours before your procedure. Besides, do not take laxatives or drink coffee before and after treatment. However, you don’t need to fast before or after visiting us.

You can eat normally, although many clients prefer not to have a particularly heavy meal immediately before the appointment. If a laxative is part of prescribed medical treatment, do not change prescribed medication without appropriate medical advice; contact us before your appointment if you are unsure.

Who should not choose this treatment?

Colon hydrotherapy is not suitable for everyone. In addition, the supplier states that this herbal preparation is not suitable during planned pregnancy, pregnancy or breastfeeding, and is not suitable for children.

Please tell your therapist about your medical history, medication, recent surgery, rectal bleeding, significant abdominal pain and any known plant allergies. Chamomile can rarely cause allergic reactions in susceptible people, particularly those sensitive to plants in the daisy family.
