Do I have a food intolerance or a food allergy?

It’s common to believe that a food allergy and food intolerance are the same. However, these processes are different in the body.

Firstly, a food allergy can cause a life-threatening condition called anaphylaxis. It is when released chemicals act on the blood vessels to cause swelling. Besides, food allergies typically appear instantly up to two hours after consumption.

Secondly, food intolerance is not life-threatening. On the other hand, food intolerance may take up to three days to show any symptoms, making it problematic to identify the cause. However, it can cause distressing symptoms, such as Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), migraines and headaches, skin issues, tiredness and joint pain.

Suspect you may have a food allergy instead of a food intolerance? Don’t worry.

What will the Premium food intolerance test find out?

So, this test will analyse your IgG antibody reactions to 208 food and drink ingredients. For instance, there are four different types of food-specific IgG antibodies. Unlike our competitors, we test four levels to pinpoint the components your body is reacting to.

However, please note that this test will NOT pick up on the following:

  • Food allergies (IgE antibodies)
  • Coeliac disease
  • Enzyme deficiencies, such as lactose intolerance
  • Histamine sensitivity
  • Chemical sensitivities

For who is this test?

The Premium Food Intolerance Test programme is our bestselling test and is ideal for those suffering from intolerance-related symptoms who want to optimise their diet.

Also, if you are merely curious whether you have a food intolerance†, we recommend our FirstStep test. Besides, it is a simple positive/negative indicator test.

Those suffering from IBS symptoms should consider our IBS Diet Programme, an alternative to the Premium food intolerance test, which tests for the same ingredients. However, it includes post-test care tailored to IBS sufferers. Meanwhile, our Ideal Weight programme is a better option for people specifically looking to change their weight by addressing their food intolerances.

Most noteworthy, if you are experiencing symptoms of any kind, you should always consult with your GP before following a YorkTest programme.

Please also note that we’re unable to provide this test to people who are:

  • Suffering from a blood-borne disease such as Hepatitis or HIV
  • Pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Under the age of 2 years

How accurate are the results of the premium food intolerance test?

We are proud to say that our laboratory has a >98% reproducibility rate. It also means that, on average, two separate tests carried out with the same person’s sample (taken on the same day) will correlate with each other >98% of the time.

Besides, our laboratory is regularly audited by independent authorities, staffed by fully trained and highly qualified scientists and uses the latest equipment and procedures to ensure the utmost accuracy.

Scientific Director Dr Gill Hart oversees the laboratory team and has been with us since 2005. Besides, Dr Hart is a leading UK biochemist and an expert in food intolerance who is passionate about scientific innovation. Moreover, she has over 30 years of experience developing and validating diagnostic tests and testing services.

What happens after I receive my results?

Your results

So, you will receive precise, colour-coded test results within ten days. Firstly, these will summarise the complete list of ingredients in three categories. For example, if a food or drink appears in the green column, there is no reaction to that ingredient. However, should it appear in the red or amber column, a firm (red) or borderline (amber) IgG reaction has been detected?

Meanwhile, your results will arrive in a pack. It will also contain a food and drink diary and a support booklet. These resources will give you more helpful information about food intolerance and nutrition. Furthermore, the logbook is ideal for recording your progress as you remove your “trigger foods” from your diet.

Nutritional support

Further, you need to call our team to make an appointment for your first nutritional consultation. Besides, we included two 30-minute telephone consultations on the price of your programme, and they provide invaluable advice from our dietary professionals.

Moreover, our nutritional therapist team is there to guide you on nutritious alternatives to your “trigger foods” and answer any queries about the elimination diet.

The elimination diet

In conclusion, we recommend you cut out your personal “trigger foods” for 12 weeks to give yourself the best chance of experiencing the benefits of your elimination diet. In our 2017 customer survey, 4 out of 5 customers saw improvements in their health after following a YorkTest programme.

We also understand that changing your diet can be challenging. Therefore, our friendly and knowledgeable Customer Care team are always there for you to offer additional support if required. Besides, they can contact and offer advice six days a week, including Saturdays.

† To clarify, YorkTest defines Food Intolerance as a food-specific IgG reaction. We recommend that you discuss food intolerance symptoms with a GP before undertaking a YorkTest programme.
