The intestine is not only an organ that digests food. Besides, the bacteria inhabit it are indispensable in protecting the body against infections. We also want to tell you what factors affect the intestinal microflora to maintain balance and strengthen the body’s defences.

The intestinal microflora consists of various microorganisms living in the human gastrointestinal tract. So, most of them are bacteria of the large intestine, represented mainly by bifidobacteria and lactobacilli. Microorganisms-probiotics are essential for human health. They perform many functions necessary to ensure the healthy functioning of the body.

The main ones are the following:

  • digestion of food;
  • synthesis of specific vitamins (K, B12, PP, etc.);
  • an obstacle to the reproduction of pathogenic (pathogenic) and conditionally pathogenic microorganisms;
  • stimulation of immunity;
  • prevention of toxins reabsorption;
  • etc.

There are also pathogenic or conditionally pathogenic microorganisms in the intestine, usually suppressed by friendly bacteria.

However, many factors associated with man’s daily existence, habits, environment, diseases, and medications can adversely affect the intestinal microflora, disrupting its balance.

Beneficial microflora of the gut spoils from such unfavourable factors as:

  • malnutrition;
  • alcohol intoxication;
  • diseases of the digestive system: liver, stomach, pancreas;
  • long-term use of antibiotics;
  • stress.

Meanwhile, gastroenterologists consider proper nutrition the primary condition for maintaining intestinal microflora balance.

An essential component of the diet, which helps maintain the population of probiotics in a healthy state, are fermented milk products containing reduced fat: kefir, yoghurt, fermented milk, yoghurt. To sum up, intestinal microflora is an essential component of health. Colonic irrigation also helps restore the microflora balance.
