Intestinal microflora is a variety of microorganisms living in the human gastrointestinal tract. Most of them are bacteria of the large intestine, represented mainly by bifidobacteria and lactobacilli. These are important for human health microorganisms-probiotics, performing a lot of functions necessary to ensure standard vital functions. The main ones are the following:

  • digestion of food;
  • synthesis of certain vitamins (K, B12, PP, etc.);
  • an obstacle to the reproduction of pathogenic (pathogenic) and conditionally pathogenic microorganisms;
  • stimulation of immunity;
  • prevention of toxins reabsorption;
  • etc.

In the intestine, there are also pathogenic or conditionally pathogenic microorganisms, which are usually suppressed by the above-mentioned friendly bacteria. However, many factors associated with the daily existence of man, his habits, the environment, diseases and medications taken, can adversely affect the intestinal microflora, disrupting its balance. In this case, conditions are created for the development of pathogenic microorganisms, the healthy function of the intestine is interrupted, the immune system is suppressed – the body’s ability to resist infections.

Intestinal microflora: negative and positive aspects

Intestinal microflora spoils from such unfavourable factors as:

  • malnutrition;
  • alcohol intoxication;
  • diseases of the digestive system: liver, stomach, pancreas;
  • long-term use of antibiotics;
  • stress.

The primary condition for maintaining a balance of intestinal microflora is that gastroenterologists consider proper nutrition. It should be balanced, diverse, using mostly natural food. The most essential component of the diet, which helps maintain intestinal microflora in a healthy state, are fermented milk products of reduced fat content: kefir, yoghurt, fermented milk, yoghurt.
