Intestinal obstruction is a severe condition in which the patency of the small or large intestine is partially or entirely impaired. Further, it prevents food and liquids from passing through it.

Treatment

Symptoms caused by this condition include abdominal pain, constipation, nausea, and vomiting. However, we can clear the obstruction on time. If we don’t, it could ultimately hinder the intestine’s function. Moreover, it can cause perforations in the gut, severe infections in the abdominal cavity (peritonitis), shock, and death. Nevertheless, quick and careful treatment can prevent bowel obstruction without long-term health consequences.

Many diseases can cause intestinal obstruction. In addition, intestinal obstruction can result from “mechanical” obstruction, in which a hernia or a tumour physically clogs the intestinal passage. The obstacle can also result from an improper bowel operation, such as a paralytic intestine obstruction (pseudo-obstruction).

Intestinal obstruction: causes and prevention

In short, mechanical obstruction of the small intestine causes:

  • intestinal adhesions;
  • hernias;
  • neoplasms in the small intestine;
  • inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn’s disease);
  • invagination of the intestine – the introduction of one part of the intestine into another;
  • abnormal curvature of the intestine.

Mechanical obstruction of the large intestine happens less than in the small intestine.

Symptoms

Reasons cause it:

  • Diverticulitis is a condition in which a bulging wall (diverticula) in the digestive tract becomes infected and inflamed;
  • strictures – narrowing of the intestines caused by inflammation and scarring;
  • cancer of the large intestine;
  • volvulus.

Paralytic intestine obstruction can cause the same symptoms as mechanical obstruction, but no blockage exists. In this condition, the bowel is malfunctioning due to problems with the nerves or muscles.

To sum up, the reasons for this condition can be:

  • Diseases that affect the nerves or muscles (Parkinson’s disease, etc.);
  • postponed operations on the organs of the abdominal cavity;
  • some medicines;
  • consequences of infection.

Only highly skilled specialists perform colonic irrigation in our clinic. This procedure helps prevent intestinal obstruction, strengthen colon muscles, restore the microflora, and remove toxins.
