Some clients choose this enhanced option because they are interested in traditional herbal approaches to digestive wellbeing. Others enjoy adding the herbal element to their regular colonic appointment. Parkland Natural Health has used this Practitioner Supplies formulation for around 20 years, and it remains popular with many returning clients.

What does this appointment include?

  • Personal consultation – we discuss your bowel habits, digestive comfort and reasons for choosing the treatment.
  • Suitability screening – we check whether colon hydrotherapy and the herbal preparation are suitable for you.
  • Closed-system colonic irrigation – we use our gravity-fed system with warm filtered water.
  • Professional herbal preparation – your therapist incorporates Practitioner Supplies Enema Herbs where appropriate.
  • Gentle abdominal massage – your therapist may use this during the session for comfort and release.

What are Practitioner Supplies Enema Herbs?

We use the professional Enema Herbs formulation supplied by Practitioner Supplies. The supplier designed this liquid herbal blend specifically for enema use and states that the combination may have cleansing, soothing and relaxing properties within the smooth muscle of the bowel, help with gas and help stimulate the liver and gallbladder.

Product source: Practitioner Supplies – Enema Herbs.

Which herbs are in the current formulation?

The current professional blend contains:

  • Red Clover (Trifolium pratense)
  • Raspberry Leaf (Rubus idaeus)
  • Burdock Root (Arctium lappa)
  • Yellow Dock (Rumex crispus)
  • German Chamomile (Chamomilla recutita)

We use the current formula supplied by Practitioner Supplies.

Red Clover, liver cells and membrane protection

Red Clover has attracted scientific interest because it contains naturally occurring isoflavones, including biochanin A and formononetin. Research into traditional Red Clover preparations has identified and measured both compounds in ethanolic Red Clover tinctures.

Scientific source: Dynamics of the isoflavone metabolome of traditional preparations of Trifolium pratense.

Researchers have studied biochanin A in several experimental models of liver injury. In one rat study, liver damage increased lipid peroxidation and disrupted liver membrane integrity. Biochanin A improved several oxidative-stress markers, including malondialdehyde, glutathione, superoxide dismutase and catalase.

Scientific source: Biochanin A Ameliorates Arsenic-Induced Hepato- and Hematotoxicity in Rats.

A separate mouse study also found that biochanin A reduced liver injury markers and hepatic lipid peroxidation while activating the Nrf2 antioxidant pathway.

Scientific source: PubMed PMID 27344638 – Biochanin A and experimental acute liver injury.

These findings are relevant because lipid peroxidation can damage cell membranes. They provide a scientific basis for interest in the cell-protective and membrane-protective properties of Red Clover constituents. However, these were animal studies and did not test a Red Clover herbal colonic in people.

What does research show about Red Clover itself?

Laboratory research has also found antioxidant activity in Trifolium pratense and an ability to reduce lipid peroxidation under experimental conditions.

Scientific source: Trifolium pratense L. as a Potential Natural Antioxidant.

More recent cell research found that Red Clover extract reduced lipid peroxidation and suppressed ferroptotic cell death by affecting cellular iron balance. This was a cell study rather than a clinical liver study, but it adds to scientific interest in Red Clover and cellular protection.

Scientific source: PubMed PMID 36796742 – Red Clover extract and ferroptotic cell death.

Red Clover research and alcohol-related liver injury

Formononetin is another isoflavone found in Red Clover. A 2025 study examined formononetin in mice with chronic alcohol-related liver injury. Researchers reported less liver injury, oxidative stress, acetaldehyde accumulation and fat build-up. They also found improvements in mitochondrial integrity and glutathione balance.

Scientific source: PubMed PMID 41110354 – Formononetin and experimental alcohol-related liver disease.

This result is scientifically interesting, especially because some of our returning clients choose this herbal colonic after weekends involving richer food, socialising or more alcohol than usual. However, the research involved formononetin in mice. It does not show that our herbal colonic removes alcohol, repairs alcohol-related liver damage or replaces medical care.

What about Burdock Root?

Burdock Root is another ingredient in the blend with experimental liver research behind it. In a rat model involving chronic ethanol exposure and additional chemical liver injury, Arctium lappa improved several biochemical and tissue markers and reduced lipid peroxidation.

Scientific source: PubMed PMID 12218354 – Hepatoprotective effects of Arctium lappa in experimental liver injury.

Again, researchers gave burdock orally to animals. The study therefore supports scientific interest in the herb but does not prove a clinical effect from a herbal colonic implant.

Why do some clients choose this treatment after a busy weekend?

In our practice, some returning clients particularly enjoy this appointment after weekends involving social events, richer food or more alcohol than usual. They often regard it as part of a personal wellbeing or “reset” routine.

The herbal colonic does not remove alcohol from the bloodstream or reverse liver damage. The NHS explains that drinking too much alcohol over time can damage the liver and that drinking less, or not drinking at all, reduces the risk of alcohol-related liver disease.

Health source: NHS – Alcohol-related liver disease.

What happens during the appointment?

First, your therapist discusses your general health, bowel habits and reasons for choosing the treatment. We also complete suitability screening before we start.

During the procedure, your therapist introduces warm filtered water through our closed-system, gravity-fed setup. Your therapist controls the filling and release according to your comfort and feedback. Gentle abdominal massage may also form part of the session.

Where suitable, your therapist incorporates the diluted professional herbal preparation during the appointment.

Important suitability information

Practitioner Supplies states that Enema Herbs are not suitable during planned pregnancy, pregnancy or breastfeeding or for children. The current formulation is suitable for vegetarians and vegans and does not contain any of the 14 major listed food allergens.

If screening shows that this appointment is not appropriate for you, we will not proceed and we will give you a full refund. You can also read our colonic irrigation suitability, restrictions and contraindications.

How should I prepare?

A quick tip: don’t drink any liquids two hours before your procedure. Besides, do not take laxatives or drink coffee before and after treatment. However, you don’t need to fast before or after visiting us.
